WHO WE ARE

The Fundació Jubert Figueras (FJF) is a non-profit healthcare organization. It was legally founded on December 16th, 2003, by Mr. Miguel Angel Campo Güerri, notary public of Barcelona, and entered in the Register of Foundations of the Generalitat de Catalunya with number 1966.

MISSION

The FJF aims to improve the quality of life of low-income families forced to move away from their usual residence due to the hospitalization or hospital treatment of one of their members.

INSTITUTIONAL VALUES

HOSPITALITY: the wish to assist those far away from their homes.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: pursuing equal opportunities for the right of all patients to receive the emotional support only family members can give.

OPENNESS AND ACCESSIBILITY: open to all types of disease, and to all patients regardless of age or condition.

TRANSPARENCY: we manage our projects to meet high standards of effectiveness and efficiency, particularly when it comes to the use of the financial resources we are granted, and we inform our partners, friends and collaborators of the foundation’s activities by means of regular reports.

BACKGROUND

The FJF is created in response to different factors:

> The increasing specialization of health centers - as a consequence of the planned distribution of high technology resources - has resulted in some treatments and techniques only being available in a few designated centers.
> The improvement of life expectancy and the socialization of medicine have made it possible for a growing number of people to be offered advanced treatment, without restrictions due to age or economic circumstances.

These two factors explain why more and more patients coming from other towns in Catalunya or Spain (or even from other countries) arrive in Barcelona everyday to undergo treatment. The public health system takes charge of the patients but not of their families.

In addition to this, the present situation of the real estate market has made it very difficult for many people to afford housing. Most families of patients that are compelled to stay in Barcelona for weeks or months cannot afford the rent.

The boom of tourism in the city of Barcelona has multiplied the number of available hotel rooms, but also their price, to such an extent that nowadays the cheapest hostels in town are advertised at 40 euros per night.

This is the reason why the caregivers in many low-income families seem to have no choice but to live in miserable conditions as they stand by the side of their sick relatives throughout the treatment process.
